On behalf of the United States Agency for International Development’s Banking on Health project, Banyan Global conducted four two-day trainings for loan officers of two commercial banks in Ethiopia. The trainings presented the findings of market research on the private health sector and discussed marketing strategies, opportunities, and risks in the sector, as well as cash-flow lending techniques for the private health sector.
Banyan Global facilitated training-of-trainers sessions for midwives, midwife tutors, doctors, and business-development advisors to roll out a foundational course in how to start and operate a private birthing station, entitled Establishing Community Midwives in the Community. The training included modules on entrepreneurship, making connections in the community and marketing, record keeping, stock control, business registration, banking, quality service, savings, and planning for the future. Through this training of trainers more than 900 community midwives will receive instruction.
On behalf of the United States Agency for International Development’s Banking on Health project, Banyan Global conducted a series of half-day workshops for four commercial banks in Ethiopia. The workshops presented the findings of market research on the private health sector and discussed market strategies, opportunities, and risks in the sector, as well as the loan-product needs of private-health-sector businesses.
Banyan Global facilitated a training-of-trainers session for business-development specialists to roll out a five-day course in basic business and financial management. The training covered modules on entrepreneurship, contracting, taxation, working with insurance companies, recording keeping, marketing, and planning. The newly trained trainers taught the course to 230 physicians running medical practices that were just privatized throughout Georgia.
Lisa Tarantino, an associate with Banyan Global, worked with a team of consultants and the Azerbaijan Microfinance Association to deliver this training course, Tools and Techniques for Effective Financial Risk Management, to microfinance institutions and banks in Azerbaijan. The course, which Banyan Global offers commercially, focuses on how to measure, manage, and monitor foreign exchange, liquidity, and interest rate risks to improve sustainability and profitability and to meet the requirements of investors, commercial funders, and regulators. The course covers internal structures, testing techniques, limit setting, liability management, and funding structures so managers can better understand the relationship between risk management activities and managing risk itself. After taking the course, participants are able to assess their institution’s financial risk and employ proven risk-management techniques, tools, and resources.
Banyan Global moderated a three-day workshop for Maanaveeya, a subsidiary of the Oikocredit social investment fund in India. The purpose of the workshop was to share updates about Maanaveeya's technical-assistance efforts, understand partners' needs, and help them to develop a strategy for addressing their institutional gaps. Thirty microfinance organizations from across India attended the workshop.

As part of the USAID-funded Private Sector Program for Ethiopia project, this five-day training of trainers course was delivered to trainers from four business-training and consulting firms. The courses ultimately will be offered to 100 private-practice clinics participating in the USAID and government of Ethiopia-sponsored program to offer tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS testing and treatment through private clinics in Ethiopia. As these clinics begin to offer these services, the training Financial Management for Owners of Private Medical Clinics: Using Financial Information to Make Business Decisions and the one-day course Using Financial Data to Create Financial Statements for Bookkeepers will help the clinics to develop sustainable management of these services.

Banyan Global is partnering with the USAID PRISM Project to help local training providers deliver business management courses to midwives, as part of USAID's Banking on Health Project. The goal is to teach midwives how to manage a private business, access finance, and increase the quality of services to benefit both their patients and their businesses.
Taara Chandani, a senior program officer at Banyan Global, is helping to design and facilitate a capacity-building and compliance workshop for over 15 nongovernmental organization (NGO) partners involved in the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded HIV/AIDS Partnership project in Zimbabwe. The partners provide HIV/AIDS testing and counseling services and behavior change communication (BCC) campaigns in regions across Zimbabwe.
As part of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Banking on Health project, Banyan Global conducted information sessions for financial institutions on lending to the health sector. They provided bankers with data on growth trends in the sector, including profiles of different segments (such as pharmacists, doctors' clinics, and private hospitals).
Banyan Global facilitated a training-of-trainers session for Partners Jordan, a local training firm, to roll out financial-management training to women doctors, working with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Private Sector Project for Women's Health. The training covered modules on financial reporting, business planning, marketing, pricing of services, and access to finance. Partners Jordan is rolling out the training to 85 doctors in different regions of Amman.
On behalf of the USAID Banking on Health (BoH) project, Lisa Tarantino led workshops with three banks and two microfinance institutions in Romania on the development of loan products and marketing initiatives for Romania's small-scale health sector. Workshops were based on the results of market research conducted by BoH on financing needs of small health care providers and distributors for the benefit of financial institutions interested in deepening their exposure to the health sector.
Working as part of Banking on Health, Banyan Global conducted three training courses at the Sixteenth Congress of the Peruvian Society of OB/GYNs. The courses taught private sector OB/GYNs how to develop a business plan, analyze financial information as a prerequisite to developing financial statements, and finance an investment in their private practice.
As part of USAID's Banking on Health Project, Banyan Global partnered with John Snow International, the Romanian National Institute for Health Research, and the Society for Education in Contraception and Sexuality to deliver training in financial management and planning to family doctors. This continuing education course is available to private practice practitioners in each region in Romania.

In Managua, Nicaragua, Banyan Global conducted training-of-trainer workshops, followed by three 5-hour courses for 38 loan officers and branch managers of Procredit, Findesa, and ACODEP, a trio of microfinance institutions (MFIs). The training series, part of USAID's Banking on Health Project, assisted MFIs that are participating in a pilot microinsurance project, in collaboration with Nicaragua's Social Security Institute (INSS). Topics covered a broad range of information about the health product, coverage, and eligibility; the process for subscribing new clients; and strategies for selling this product.
As part of USAID's Banking on Health Project, Banyan Global trained 47 loan officers and managers from three microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Uganda: Uganda Microfinance Limited, Post Bank, and FINCA/Uganda. The objective was to help MFIs in Uganda enter the private health care market. Workshops explored training techniques, market segmentation, market research methods, and the private health sector.

Banyan Global worked with Abt Associates to train private providers contracting with the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute. We conducted this training as part of USAID's Banking on Health Project. Participants learned how to structure and implement a cost accounting methodology that allows providers to measure and control the actual costs of health service provision. The methodology is particularly important to providers seeking to maximize competitiveness and profitability under a capitated system, which controls health care costs by paying providers a fixed, negotiated price for service provision.
Microfinance institutions (MFIs) learned how to develop systems and products to ensure that they and their clients have the capacity to cope with disasters. Banyan Global led a seminar for health sector NGOs from Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia on financial management and access to finance. The seminar provided guidance on strategic thinking and management for those organizations facing changes in donor funding. Topics included financial-management skills such as cash flow planning and efficiency analysis. In addition, participating NGOs received a framework for identifying sources of financing and diversifying their funding sources.

Banyan Global trained private providers contracting with the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute (INSS). We conducted this program as part of USAID's Banking on Health Project. Participants learned how to prepare bankable business plans; conduct feasibility study analysis and cash flow projections for new investments; improve financial-management and analysis skills (financial reporting, benchmarking, and business management); understand mergers and acquisitions (process, negotiations, and valuation of a company); and apply for and manage credit.
The Pakistan Microfinance Network (PMN) sponsored this course for the country's microfinance community. The training program established a framework for identifying financial risks and provided tools for measuring and managing them. It was oriented for CEOs and senior financial managers of microfinance institutions (MFIs). Banyan Global trained financial institutions in expanding their health sector portfolios, as part of USAID's Banking on Health Project. The course provided an introduction to the private health sector and covered such topics as understanding the midwife-clinic business model from a banker's perspective, credit analysis, cash flow-based lending, and loan structuring for a midwife clinic's financing needs.
As part of USAID's Banking on Health Project, Banyan Global trained two banks in Nicaragua with a USAID health sector Development Credit Authority (DCA) guarantee. This course focused on lending to private health clinics, the Empresas Médicas Previsionales (EMPs) that are contracted-out through Nicaragua's social security system. Topics included understanding the health care market in Nicaragua; analyzing health care business models; understanding how different payment mechanisms, such as capitated plans, fee for service, and insurance plans, affect cash flow and profitability; analyzing the risks and opportunities of lending to an EMP; cash flow lending and financial analysis of an EMP; benchmarking; the importance of the site visit in the loan analysis process; and factors that determine loan terms.
Banyan Global introduces its latest course for microfinance institutions. The course is tailored to MFIs that are transforming into regulated, deposit-taking institutions or those that are growing and have more complex asset and liability structures. The course is appropriate for MFIs in stable and crisis political and economic environments.
